DIY: LEAFY LOVELY DECOR

We love the gorgeous shadows and silhouettes created by skeleton leaves but we wanted to give them the Knot & Pop twist, adding a splash of colour for some fun decor for your wedding, party or even home. We loved this DIY leaf backdrop as it is super simple and won’t break the bank (or your patience) to make, so what’s stopping you!? Get your craft on!

DIY Leaf BackdropYOU WILL NEED:

  • Skeleton leaves (we got our skeleton leaves on eBay, but you could try HobbyCraft or any similar arts and craft shop)
  • Paintbrushes (We used these watercolour brushes from WHSmith. The thicker brushes were great for creating the layers)
  • Food colourings of your choice (we used pink, blue and yellow)
  • Bowls to mix colours
  • Invisible or gold thread
  • Spray painted branch

DIY Leaf BackdropMix your food dyes to get 3 colours of your choice. We mixed blue with a few drops of yellow to create a gorgeous blue-y green. We teamed this with the original pink and blue food dyes for a fresh, Spring look.

DIY Leaf BackdropSelect your first colour and paint the bottom third of the leaf, leaving to dry once done.

DIY Leaf BackdropOnce the first third of the leaf is dried, select your next colour and paint the middle third of the leaf. We opted for pink to add a pop in between the two blue/green tones.

DIY Leaf BackdropAfter the middle third of the leaf is dry, move onto the final third. We painted this is a gorgeous green.

DIY Leaf BackdropThere are no rules! Mix up the colours and the order you paint them in to give a less regimented and more interesting effect. We left a couple of leaves with some sections unpainted to soften the overall look.

DIY Leaf BackdropOnce all your leaves are dry, now is the time to get creative – there are so many ways you could use these lovely leaves. Try stringing the leaves onto golden or invisible thread to create some garlands to adorn your next summer party. Or hang from real trees so they fall in amongst the natural leaves – adding an unexpected pop of colour.

DIY Leaf BackdropWe threaded the leaves onto invisible string and hung from a golden branch to create a gorgeous backdrop or feature wall.
