INTERVIEW: KIRSTIE ALLSOPP & WIN TICKETS TO THE HANDMADE FAIR
If there’s one thing we love at B.LOVED it’s a bit of hands-on crafting! We love sharing DIY tutorials created by our clever team, and even more so when you share the results with us. So when I heard about The Handmade Fair, coming to Hampton Court Palace this 18-20th September, with Kirstie Allsopp girlcrush alert!), of course I just couldn’t wait to find out more, so I asked Kirstie herself to spill the beans (you can read my interview with her below).
In it’s second year, The Handmade Fair is a craft show with a big, big difference. You’ll not only get to buy pretty handmade goodies from your favourite crafters in the Shopping Village and Artisan Marketplace, but get inspired to create your own too. Yup, the whole fair is one huge interactive weekend of crafting magic, with lots of opportunities for you to get hands-on and learn from the pro’s!
You won’t want to miss the Super Theatre, where Kirsty will be joined by some B.LOVED faves including Bright Bazaar, Lamplighter London, Etsy and Mollie Makes and more with live demo’s, tutorials and Q&A sessions.
You’ll also be able to learn a new skill at the Skills Workshops – covering everything from papercraft and upcycling to handy projects for your wedding, taught by Kitten Greyson, Annie Sloan, Jane Means and so many more. This year there’s even a dedicated Wedding Tent, sponsored by Hobbycraft.
Still want more? Then how about joining 300 other crafters in the Grand Makes tents – where you’ll learn to make a super quick project, and a whole bunch of new friends as everyone gets chatting!
After all that of course you’ll want to stop off in the Food & Drink Court where you’ll find a range of quirky and fun snacks and beverages to keep you going.
This is one fair you NEED to visit, so I’m giving away 50 PAIRS OF FREE ENTRY TICKETS worth £15 to you my lovely B.LOVED Readers. Just pop your details here to enter, it’s really that simple!
And now, I’m absolutely thrilled to hand over to Kirstie to tell us more…
How did The Handmade Fair come about and what made you want to get involved? I was approached by the very clever Chris Hughes from Brand Events, who I worked with many years ago at the first ever Country Living Fair. Chris didn’t know me then, but I knew him and when he asked me if I wanted to work on my own Craft Fair, I was able to say that I knew him and I knew the amazing work he’s done over the years. It was a no brainer really. The rest is history…
What makes it different to other fairs? It is a real, live, making event that prioritises learning, using amazing teachers, sharing top notch skills, as well as the shopping and the amazing food. It’s like 3D tv without the funny glasses.
Where does your love of crafting come from? Before my mum was an interior decorator, she framed pictures for a living. She also made clothes, repurposed items in our home and actually made brilliant dolls clothes as well. Both my parents painted pictures as well. We always had an ethos of reuse, recycle, repurpose. I guess I’ve just grown up appreciating everything that’s handmade and homemade, be it new or old.
Where do you find your ideas and inspiration? Everywhere – markets, home, online, everywhere I travel up and down the country. The things people send me on Twitter are incredible…
Who are you most excited to see exhibiting at the fair? Any new designers or names we should be looking out for? There are so many brilliant people coming, it would be unfair for me to name check. I’m always in the Super Theatre, but I’ve made sure there are a couple of hours available each day where I can hop in the golf buggy and get around the Shopping Village and Skills Workshops tents to join in.
We know you love a good wedding, and are excited to see the introduction of the DIY Wedding Tent this year! What advice would you give brides tacking craft projects for their big day? Prepare and don’t leave to the last minute – the countdown is rapid and flies by. Rope in friends, supply them with wine and food and make an evening, weekend, or several out of it… it’s GREAT fun.
And finally… what would be your dream wedding style? I have an incredible team who have been doing some sensational weddings recently, Lisa McCann and Kitten Grayson who are The Isle of You. They’d be the chosen ones helping me pull it together…
I’m also delighted to have been invited to style the Press Tent & Blogger’s Lounge, hosting your fave craft bloggers and editors over the weekend. Join us for an #InstaPrettyParty every day at 11am, 2pm and 4pm to learn how to style your own Instagram shots of the crafts you’ve made with me and a professional photographers Xander & Thea and Sarah Hannam. Plus, brides can pop in any day at 3pm for wedding chat and cake (what’s not to love?!) Keep your eyes on the hashtag #InstaPrettyParty for more info soon!
