GINGERBREAD HOUSE DECORATING PARTY

When you’re little one’s birthday falls in the middle of holiday season it can be hard to make sure their day feels special, what with all the festive fun going on all around.  Baker and cake designer Susie Kelly wanted to plan a memorable party for her daughter, Mia, who turned five in the middle of this month.  Being five, she’s obsessed with all things Christmas, so Susie decided to create a fun Gingerbread House decorating party for Mia and her friends at her home in Surrey.  Decorated with fun woodland touches, her home was transformed into a winter-y Hansel and Gretel wonderland, complete with a snow covered dessert table and even a polar bear serving the drinks!

When thinking about what to plan for a December birthday I decided that this year I wanted to keep it Christmassy! With my daughter Mia’s birthday and Christmas within a couple of weeks of each other I usually keep things seperate, but as she’s turning 5 this year Christmas is such a magical time for her I decided to embrace it!  We went for a Gingerbread House decorating party, a concept popular in the States, but which I haven’t heard about much here in the UK.  I made the houses and put them together before the party and then during the course of a fun afternoon my daughter and her friends decorated them with icing and candy! They absolutely loved it and were sat in their seats for hours perfecting those final touches. It was so lovely to watch them all come up with unique ideas on how to decorate each of their houses to take home.

We all had a fantastic time and the next day my daughter said she wanted the same party again next year which, trust me, means it was a total hit!  She was planning her next party before this one had even happened!!

I can not recommend highly enough doing a little Gingerbread House party with you and your little ones next year.  Don’t panic if you are not a baker, as places like Lidl and Ikea have pre-made kits – no baking necessary – so there really is no excuse!!

Happy Baking and Merry Christmas everyone xxxx
