We’re so in love with this sweet maternity shoot in Paris. The pretty pink pastels and gorgeously soft images by Tala Nicole Photography are the perfect way to celebrate the impending arrival of Joanie & Gavin’s baby girl.
Lindsay was born on 12 September 2014. Before she came into our lives, my husband Gavin and I were a typical young married couple. We kept busy with our careers, and love to eat, travel and take photos, in this particular order!
After one exceptionally busy year at work, I felt tired, depleted and in need of some time to recharge. My maternal desires finally kicked in but my lifestyle, working hours and health didn’t feel aligned with our plans to start a family. I decided to book an overseas trip, starting with a month in Japan on my own, a stopover in Malaysia, then join Gavin on a European route through Austria, Germany, UK, and France. You can imagine how thrilled we were to find out just after Christmas that we were having a baby! My obstetrician gave me the all-clear to take the solo journey to Japan and eat as much sushi as I craved (from reputable sources, of course).
As all our friends at home were expecting us to be away for a few months anyway, Gavin and I decided to keep our news a secret. It was an amazing personal experience in doing so as there was so much happiness bubbling away inside of me, along with my hopes, dreams and deep love for this child. I walked around each day with a smile on my face and talked to my baby about everything I saw and everything I felt. I was calm and more at peace than I had ever been. It was here in the ancient mountainous city of Takayama that I began to romanticise over the idea of a maternity photoshoot in Paris. I did a quick search on Google and knew straight away that Tala would be our photographer. We didn’t consider anyone else. Her images convey love, authenticity and warmth, and it was exactly how I wanted to remember this time in our lives as we anticipated our first child. We also thought it would be fun to share one of our favourite maternity shoot photos on Facebook once we returned to Melbourne as our way to finally reveal we’re having a baby!
We asked Tala if she would focus her shoot on Gavin and I as husband and wife first, and then as budding new parents. We’re great friends and still very much in love with each other. We’d love for our children to remember us this way. Tala was absolutely amazing to work with. She took us to Le Marais, along the Seine River, the Louvre before finishing at Champ de Mars for photos with the spectacular Eiffel Tower in the background.
I ordered a pair of handmade baby ballet slippers from Etsy and shipped it straight to Tala as we were still travelling through Europe. They were so cute and little! It was our only prop to symbolise we were expecting a baby girl. I bought a dress from Takashimaya in Japan, and searched obsessively before finally finding the perfect pair of coral-coloured heels to match! Gavin wore a Burberry trenchcoat he bought in London to match my nude bolero style jacket. I did my own make up, and had my hair done at a local hairsalon in Paris near where we stayed.
Lindsay is the most incredible little human being I have ever met. I never knew I had such capacity to love another person until she was mine. I look forward to watching her reach her full potential, and being the best role model for her as I can possibly be.
