I’m so delighted to share this beautifully relaxed engagement shoot from South Africa with you this morning. Captured on the stunning Velgelegen Wine Estate in South Africa’s Western Cape, photographer Dehan Englebrecht has captured the love and romance with a radiance that just blows me away. Henk & Paula’s story is adorable, as are they. I love Paula’s relaxed boho style and flower crown!
We met at the end of our second year at University. We were both on the house committees of our respective residences and our two residences were paired up for JOOL. JOOL (now named MAD) is an annual competition on campus during which residences collect money for charity and we were on tour along the coast to do so. Because of this saw a lot of each other and were instantly good friends.
During this time we were walking in a big parade and as we stopped in the middle of the street I spotted a broken plastic pearl bracelet on the ground. I picked it up and, as a joke, gave it to Henk and said: One when you propose to me use these lovely pearls. (This was a big joke as I was actually dating someone else at the time) After JOOL my (Paula) phone was stolen and I knew Henk had an extra phone. He brought it over one night and the quick drop off turned into a long visit in to the late hours of the night. The next day he had to bring me the charger and we had another excuse to chat late in to the night. The attraction between us was unmissable and the nightly visits continued until it turned into romance. Four years later Henk proposed with a ring containing those same pearls that I had picked up that day. He had kept it all these years, saying that he knew that day already that he wanted to marry me!
Paula – my most memorable moment of our love story was the day Henk ‘officially’ asked me to date him. We had been seeing each other for a few months but had not made it official. I was visiting Henk on their farm in Moorreesburg. Henk woke me up one morning and said he wanted to go for a cruise on the quad bike. He drove me to the middle of a green wheat field where he had set a white, wooden table with two white wooden chairs with a lovely champagne breakfast. He had specially painted the table and chairs white because I like white furniture. That morning he asked me to be his girlfriend. He was so nervous which was so cute because he is usually so self-confident.
Henk – the most memorable moment was the day we got engaged. I was very nervous because I wanted everything to be perfect. We went for a picnic in the lovely Kirstenbosch in Cape Town, the same picnic basket that feature in our engagement shoot. There were lots of tourist at the time around us and I had to wait for the perfect moment until they left to ask. I finally went down on one knee to say a few words and asked the big question. The moment she started to cry and answered with “Definitely”, I will never forget that moment.
