it’s all in the details: modern monochrome

Hello wonderful people!  I know it’s been a little while since I last did a ‘proper’ it’s all in the details post, since over the last few weeks I’ve been sharing my top trends for 2012 and five tips for wedding planning.  Today though, my styling guide is back and this is one I’ve really been looking forward to sharing.

There’s something that always appeals to me about a black and white wedding, maybe it’s the classic simplicity or the striking contrast of colours.  Or maybe it’s that no matter how many times I see this combination it always manages to be something different.  Today, I’m looking at ways to style a modern monochrome wedding, the simple, graphic elements that create a sophisticated, contemporary scheme.

Ok, so this is the easy bit.  Black, white, obviously, and you may want to bring in a little grey or silver to soften the look.

With such a limited colour palette you may think this is also an easy choice, but actually with modern printing methods there is so much choice available – like white text on a black background.  You can go for a simple black text on white card, printed, or lettepressed for a luxury feel.  A script like font will add a touch of elegance, while a more linear typeface will create a strong, modern feel.  Mix the two up to create a balance!

You can also have fun playing with patterns and texture to add another dimension, I love this black invite with glossy text.  Layer it up with pattern and texture for a less stark look, perhaps pick out some details from your venue and include these in a graphic, stylized design.

When it comes to decor, remember that there aren’t many black flowers around, so have fun playing around with dark coloured containers that will set off lighter coloured blooms.

Tall black candles and lamps add height and create a focal point to table centres, as do black birdcages that can be filled with flowers, or even candles to create a unique and unusual statement. Think about the table linen, for a real wow factor use plain black, or black and white striped fabric on each table, or mix and match for a slightly more eclectic look.

You could also wrap black ribbon, fabric or lace around white, or glass containers to create a similar effect.

Add depth and colour to textured white bouquets using black or stripy ribbon for a modern, yet elegant look.

Ask your florist if anemones are in season around your wedding date, the rich black centres are striking and usual, the papery petals keep it soft and pretty.  During some seasons, you will also find berries and seed pods in deep black colours, which can be used to create stunning textures against a soft white bouquet.

Take a pretty and delicate cake and create a statement with a black cake stand.  These perspex ones coordinate with the design of the black bougie lamps used as table centers shown above.  An eclectic mix of black serveware is perfect for a dessert table style.

Black icing on a white cake gives a strong modern look, try different patterns or stripes for something really striking.  Keep the display simple, adding a little ribbon or elegant backdrop.

Fun, striking, elegant and modern, a monochrome scheme is a popular choice for many brides! It’s versatility means it works in many venues, from stately homes to art galleries.  If you’re planning a monochrome wedding I’d love to hear from you!
