real wedding: southern charm {megan & blake}

We’re hopping over the Atlantic this morning for some real wedding inspiration! College sweethearts Megan and Blake tied the knot in beautiful North Carolina, in true Southern style.  Inspired by the classic design of their venue, and talent of their vendors and friends, they created a sweet celebration full of elegance and charm.  It’s also chock-full of some of our favourite US brands, Kate SpadeJ. Crew and David’s Bridal, it’s all here!  I adore bride Megan’s style, just how beautiful is her wedding dress with the pretty sweetheart neckline, cute bow and gorgeous full skirt?  And the shoes?  They are gold and glittery, and Kate Spade!! Seriously, how come the US gets all the best stuff?

Their wedding was captured by Georgia wedding photographer Melissa Tuck, who submitted their wedding to me a few weeks ago with the sweetest email!

Blake and I met in high school and were college sweethearts. He proposed early one July morning in our tiny New York apartment kitchen. He woke me up early one morning and made me breakfast. Back then, Blake was not exactly an early riser, so this was a bit unusual! All of the sudden, as I was putting jam on my toast, he was next to me on one knee. It was perfect!

I bought my dress on a bit of a whim. A few weeks after Blake and I were engaged, I was with my family at the North Carolina beach. It was a rainy day, so my sisters (I have two), my Mom, two family friends (one of my bridesmaids and her mother), and I went shopping at the nearby David’s Bridal for fun. My family and friends can be quite boisterous, so of course they were loudly critiquing and ranking every dress I tried. I tried on about seven dresses but ended up picking the first dress I tried on. It was an easy decision because I had a whole panel of judges! Blake has a very clear sense of his own style and will never wear anything I ask him to, so the decision was entirely his. I think he always knew he wanted a tuxedo, especially given the venue, so he chose the tux at J. Crew.

I was addicted to several wedding blogs, but really my Mom and I were so inspired by our venue, the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill, and all the vendors it recommended.  The venue held a special meaning for us because Chapel Hill is the town where we went to college, so there are a lot of happy memories there. The Carolina Inn is a classic southern venue, and we just wanted to go with the great simple and elegant style it already has. We tried to make choices that complemented its aesthetic.  Everyone from the florist to the cake lady had great ideas for what would work in the space. Family and friends were really the most important consideration when we were planning our day, so we tried to make the wedding as personal as possible. For example, a good family friend officiated the ceremony outdoors in the courtyard behind the inn. We were so overwhelmed by the love we felt that weekend – people travelled from all over the world to be there, and it really meant so much to us to have everyone we love with us. Our wedding date is actually my parent’s wedding date, and they did an anniversary (34th!) dance to celebrate.

 What was your first dance?

Our first dance was “How Sweet It Is” by Marvin Gaye. We had a great band who played oldies and Southern beach music. We chose this song because we wanted a happy, upbeat song that would go with the style of the band and the venue.

Do you have any advice for couples currently planning their wedding?

Have fun! Don’t stress about the small things. Whenever you do start to worry, remind yourself this is a day of celebration for you and your families and friends. Keep your eye on the big picture, and it will be wonderful :)

After a decade-long career in corporate interior design, I took a giant leap of faith, left the security of an office job, and founded B.LOVED in 2011 as a platform for romantic and beautiful wedding inspiration. Thanks to a whole lot of creativity, hard work and passion, my gamble paid off and B.LOVED became one of the leading wedding blogs in the UK.

You’ll also find me working as an Editorial Stylist, where I design and curate beautiful photoshoots for wedding and lifestyle brands, as well as contributing as a founding member of bridal inspiration hub Aisle Society, and running wedding industry community the B.LOVED Hive from our super pretty base in London. Yep, I definitely have the best job in the world.
