VERVAIN – FLORAL DESIGNER

What do you like about Clifton?
Clifton has such a great atmosphere, with plenty of open spaces and shops home to so many lovely creative businesses. It is also within walking distance of all the other great areas of Bristol.

How does this area compare to the London market?
I love the wedding market around here; it’s full of so many amazing venues and suppliers. Being situated in the South West of the country with such a wealth of stunning venues and great brides is an added bonus.  My style of floristry is very suited to the picturesque setting of historic stately homes or rural barns surrounded by tumbling fields, so being outside of London means I can really enjoy these great rural locations.

Who’s your typical client?
I really don’t have a typical client type; every single couple is so unique. I may have weddings that want the same colour scheme but no two weddings ever look the same. Working countrywide allows me to work with couples from so many different places, and this year has seen many people travelling from abroad for destination weddings in the UK. One thing all my clients do have in common is their love of flowers; they appreciate and understand the importance of blooms for their day.

Describe a typical day.
At this time of year I spend a lot of time working on briefs and quotes as well as answering any questions my clients have about their upcoming weddings. I will be working on the styling and concepts of their flowers and planning roughly what flower varieties I will be using.  March and April are usually quiet months where I focus on the growing side of Vervain.

When I am not in Bristol I am up in the Midlands where a lot of the flowers I use are grown, sowing seeds, planting out and hoping we don’t get any late frosts. I will also drink copious amounts of tea and post some flower rambling on instagram!

HERMIONE HARBUTT – ACCESSORIES DESIGNER

What do you like about Clifton?
Clifton is such a vibrant place, full of pretty independent boutiques and creative people, it has a lovely feel. It has plenty of green spaces and at times I don’t feel like I am in the city. The buildings are beautiful and the suspension bridge is an icon of engineering just a stones throw away.  There is also a fantastic offering of eateries and cafes, ideal for long lazy brunches with friends or dinner out.

How does this area compare to the London market?
Bristol has many similarities to the London wedding market with stylish ladies in both locations. I do tend to meet more ladies from abroad in London, who either live there for part of the year or who travel here and schedule a visit to the showroom. Some of our brides in Bristol are based elsewhere but are coming ‘home’ to be married in the nearby area – Bristol, Bath, Wiltshire, the Cotswolds. There are so many gorgeous wedding venues in the South West it’s no surprise!

Who’s your typical client?
I don’t have a specific client as such, just a lovely variety of ladies with their own sense of discerning style and taste. As I handmake everything individually to order for each bride it means I can create a myriad of styles to suit a lot of different clients. It is such a pleasure to be able to be so creative in my work.

Describe a typical day
A typical day in the showroom usually starts with an earl grey tea (always…) whilst doing some correspondence and catching up on some social media posts etc. Bridal appointments can last over an hour if designing a bespoke piece so this can take up a large part of my day and is so enjoyable. In between appointments I could be busy working on a beautiful piece or preparing and wrapping some ready for sending out to their bride, alongside planning our next photoshoot and designing new collections. It can be quite busy as you can imagine! Never enough hours in the day…

SARAH HANNAM – PHOTOGRAPHER

What do you like about Clifton?
It has its own unique character – a community that feels like a village yet with Bristol’s amazing city benefits and it’s less than two hours from London if I have to whizz up there for meetings.

How does this area compare to the London wedding market?
Well the Cotswolds are right on the doorstep and the city of Bath and Soho House’s Babington House are nearby too.  There are lots of stylish brides planning really beautiful weddings who choose to look at local suppliers rather than to the London market as they know the quality here is just as high.  Clifton has such great wedding suppliers that a bride could literally tick several major things off their wedding to do list in a day.

Who is your typical client?
I really don’t have one.  I tend to get clients from a variety of sources including recommendations from their wedding planner or other suppliers.  My clients come in all forms where they require anything from an intimate Cotswolds elopement where I’m the witness as well as the photographer to a glamorous party in Ibiza!

Describe your typical day
I’ll answer email enquiries in the morning and map out my tasks for the day.  Image edits, album designs, contracts issued and shipping products out to clients.  I workout with a trainer once or twice a week too, so I’m fit and ready to start the new wedding season.  If I have a big task to do that requires some concentration then I often disappear around the corner to my local coffee shop.  They don’t have wifi and so I actually get lots done and am really productive there, although the downside is I’m eating lots of cake as I work!

THE MEWS CLIFTON – BRIDAL BOUTIQUE

What do you like about Clifton?
Clifton has always been a special place for me, it’s where my love for bridal and The Mews began. In my opinion, it’s one of the loveliest places in the city, from the boutiques to the Georgian architecture to the people, it definitely provides that certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ for our brides.

How does this area compare to the London wedding market?
The South-West is one of the most picturesque places in England and we’re really lucky and proud to have so many great local suppliers and wedding venues in the area.  We attract fashionable brides looking for high quality products and services which they know they can find in Clifton and the surrounding areas.

Who is your typical client?
Our brides are fashion forward with a desire to be different and our collection of designers’ offer a unique elegance, which our ‘Mews Brides’ travel far for.

Describe your typical day
We’ve recently launched our new studio in NYC so I’ve been spending a lot of time over there with my Daughter helping the set-up, it really has been all systems go.  On a normal day, I’ll head to yoga which helps to relax and clear my mind, then you can usually find me in the office ensuring all aspects of the business are running smoothly.

ANNA CAKE COUTURE – CAKE DESIGNER

What do you like about Clifton?
Clifton is a great place to visit and work. There are plenty of lovely independent shops; it’s beautiful and always bustling. It’s also a little wedding hub of it’s own, what with florists, wedding dresses, jewellers, cakes and even a few great wedding venues as well.

How does this area compare to the London market?
It certainly attracts people from all over, not just the Bristol market. With plenty of wedding venues scattered around it’s a great choice for brides who want to get away from the London vibe but still have that high end wedding using beautiful wedding using suppliers that are known for their quality all over UK, not just in Bristol.

Who’s your typical client?
We don’t really have that ‘typical’ client. We meet couples from all walks of life but all have something in common, and that is they want a beautiful delicious wedding cake. We make cakes that are rustic and beautiful and at the same time make cakes that are perfect pieces of art that almost don’t look edible. That’s what makes this job so fantastic; there is no typical cake or client.

Describe a typical day
A typical day would be arriving at the shop nice and early ready to get the café cakes prepped and looking beautiful ready to open at 10am. I will then start to work on any wedding cakes that I have on for that weekend, that could include a couple of days making sugar flowers, lots of baking and lots if icing work. There’s also a bit of tea drinking and cake tasting that also goes on- well it would be rude not to!
