WEDDINGS

What does your wedding band say about you?

Happy Friday lovelies! Are you all having a fantastic week? And no doubt lots of lovely plans for the weekend! At b.loved HQ I’m going to  be embarking on awedding-tastic weekend, with no less than FIVE amazing events, pop-up shops and designer days to attend, as well as catching up with some of my favourite wedding folk AND introducing a new feature on Sunday (this one’s for my wedding pro friends so make sure you pop back to check it out). In all, it’s going to be a weekend packed full of pretty inspiration, so I’ll be sure to keep you updated over on my Instagram feed.

Right now though, I’m delighted to welcome back Mel from My Fabulous Wedding Band for the second instalment of The Fabulous Bride’s Guide To… Live Wedding Music.  Mel has done it again with a super informative post – and she even managed to squeeze in a bit about my favourite topic – your wedding ‘brand’.  Told you I love her ;)

Who knew? This wedding planning lark requires some serious soul searching. Having to dig deep at every decision and ask yourself “What does this wedding dress / floral bunting / chocolate parfait SAY about me?” It’s emotional.  But let’s face it, there’s not a bride on the planet who wants their big day to be “a bit like everyone else’s”. Whether or not we admit it, we all secretly want our guests to fall in love with our wedding, just like we have. To swoon at our shimmering, peachy-toned bridesmaids . To smile at our cute ‘Mr & Mrs’ signage. To ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ over our bright, butterfly-adorned cocktails.

When it comes to making our nuptials our own, it’s all about making a personal style statement. We want to know that, at some level, we’ve shared something about who we are as a couple. It’s something the wedding stylists might more eloquently call your “wedding brand”.  Your wedding brand is the look, the feel, the sound, the taste of your wedding day. It’s a feast for the senses. It’s got to look gorgeous, of course. But it’s also about the vibe of your day. Can you feel the love in the room? How much do you want to laugh, or cry? How does the music make you feel?

And make no mistake, there’s nothing more emotionally evocative than music. A live wedding band – a truly fabulous one – is possibly the most powerful way to bring your unique wedding brand to life. When your guests hear and feel the music of the band you’ve chosen, they will really ‘get’ who you are as a couple, and what you’re trying to achieve with your day.  No two weddings are exactly the same, of course. But we love to talk about different wedding styles, and we can all relate to certain ‘bride tribes’ more than others. So, to help you on your way, here is some band-related inspiration for whichever wedding style most floats your boat…

Your Oh-So-Pretty Wedding

Sugar-coated pastels, too-cute florals, all served up with a generous dollop of whimsy. Yummy. If you’re channelling pretty 1940’s/50’s vintage, then the smart money is on a Swing Band or Big Band – the dance music of its day. And I’m not talking about a straight ‘tribute act’ either. You want a band that brings its own character and personality to the table, a unique take on an old classic, and a repertoire that reaches out beyond the obvious genre favourites. Think Bublé or Connick Jr.

Your Rustic Chic Wedding

A perfect English summer’s day. Dew glistening on the branches. The smell of lavender floating across the fields. Aaah, the earthy ambiance of a good rustic wedding. You probably want to complete the look with a British-inspired band (hello, Beatles fans) or you may prefer something a little more contemporary. Either way, you should keep it classic, and hire a band that knows its Right Said Fred from its Rolling Stones.

Your Laid-Back Bohemian Wedding

BOHO - Soul Fiesta (600x399)bloved-south-africa-wedding-marimbas{1. My Fabulous Wedding Band // 2. Our Wedding by Christine Meintjes}

Floral headdress… sunshine yellow accents… nature-inspired setting… Swoon. Your boho wedding is all about the laid-back luxe. If you’re getting married in an exotic location, then your music should reflect that e.g. if you’re doing it barefoot on a windswept South African beach, then an authentic Marimba band should nail it. If you’re a bit closer to South Molton, then try something with a mixed cultural vibe – for example a Soul band with a Latin edge, to keep the party fizzing over.

Your Great Gatsby Style Affair

GREAT GATSBY - Jivin' Miss Daisy (600x502)bloved-forties-wedding-music{1. My Fabulous Wedding Band // 2. Magdaleen & Chris by Moira West}

Ooo, the glamour. Aaah, the decadence. For those of us that can’t resist the allure of a chrome fitting, the flamboyant glamour of an Art Deco wedding is the last word in panache. If you’re coming over all Ginger Rogers, then you need to hot-foot it to the nearest 1920’s/30’s inspired Jazz outfit. But if you want to stay on the chic side of retro, think less ‘Smoky Jazz Club’ and more ‘Good Time Jazz’. Let’s face the music and dance.

Your Festival Wedding

Ivory wellies – check. Wedding teepee – check. Umbrellas at the ready – check. Your free-spirited wedfest promises to be the Mother of all Weddings, and here the music takes centre stage. Just like at Glasters, variety is the name of the game. That is, you’ll be wanting a little bit of everything. Bring on the Indie Rock, the Soul and Motown, the Jazz and Latin. Not for the faint hearted.

To find out what your wedding band says about you, visit My Fabulous Wedding Band and request your free ‘Made to Measure’ Wedding Band Consultation . After a decade-long career in corporate interior design, I took a giant leap of faith, left the security of an office job, and founded B.LOVED in 2011 as a platform for romantic and beautiful wedding inspiration. Thanks to a whole lot of creativity, hard work and passion, my gamble paid off and B.LOVED became one of the leading wedding blogs in the UK.

You’ll also find me working as an Editorial Stylist, where I design and curate beautiful photoshoots for wedding and lifestyle brands, as well as contributing as a founding member of bridal inspiration hub Aisle Society, and running wedding industry community the B.LOVED Hive from our super pretty base in London. Yep, I definitely have the best job in the world.
