9 SUMMER HOLIDAY ESSENTIALS YOU CAN FIT IN YOUR CARRY-ON
As we hit mid-August (umm, yes, where DID the year go?!) it’s the perfect time to start thinking about some late summer sunshine. In Europe the weather is still great through September and early October, and just a few hours flight can see you hitting the beach (without the summer holiday crowds!). The biggest problem with holidaying this time of year is the distinct lack of warm-weather clothing available on the highstreet, so I’ve scoured the net for some of the best summer holiday essentials that are chic, stylish, and most importantly, still available!
I’ve mentioned before, I’ve got packing down to a fine art. If, like me, you hate that dreaded wait at the luggage carousel, then opt for a capsule wardrobe you can fit in a cabin-sized case. Saving time at the airport (and for low-cost carriers, money on your flight tickets!) means more time on the beach. Win-win! It’s super easy to select a capsule for a summer holiday (slightly trickier in the winter with all those chunky knits!) if you stick to a single colour palette which allows you to mix up your wardrobe for different beach, day, and night! I tend to favour elegant navy, indigo and white shades, with a hint of gold for a touch of luxe, and jazz up my look with bold bright nails (gel manicure, every time) and a few brightly coloured statement necklaces.
It’s taken me years to find the perfect sunglasses (I have an impossibly small face!) but that doesn’t stop me lusting over the ‘Jennifer’ from Tom Ford, the perfect summer shades!
Heidi Klein, from £85
Ted Baker, now £41
For the little less-body confident among us (totally me!) Ted Baker make the cutest one-piece swimwear I’ve seen. I love the pretty floral patterns – perfect for feeling cute on the beach.
Another item I just can’t holiday without is my Seafolly Amnesia kaftan. It’s super light, so it dries quickly, but not too sheer – making it perfect for a quick bite in the hotel bar between swims. It’s also short enough to team with a pair of denim shorts and bikini top for a wander around the local town too! Also in white.
I always take a pair of wedges over heels. Why? Because they’re comfy enough to travel in… leaving more space in my suitcase for the essentials! These Burberry espadrilles are just right for laid-back night out glamour.
Oasis, available in White or Coral £16
For all-day wear these sweet bow sandals from Oasis are the comfiest flats around – I’ve worn mine literally all summer and they’re still going strong. With minimal strappage there’s nothing to rub, so no blisters! Hurrah!
The pleats, the chiffon, the cute length… this blush pink dress from Oasis is just right for al fresco dining, just add a chunky metallic necklace and bangle to complete the golden goddess effect!
Oliver Bonas, £49.50
Fun, flirty and oh-so-practical, this flamingo print playsuit from Oliver Bonas ticks all the right boxes for casual-yet-chic holiday attire for those days sightseeing and soaking up the culture.
Oliver Bonas, £65
Finally, a cute cotton sundress is a holiday must-have. Of course white is the perfect colour to show off your awesome tan, and cotton fabric keeps you cool in the summer sun. Oliver Bonas get it so right with this Geo Cut dress.
