#HERBLOVEDLIFE: DAY IN THE LIFE OF LOUISE BEUKES EDITOR & STYLIST AT BLOVED
Last month we introduced you to our #herBLOVEDlife series, where you get the chance to get a sneak peek behind the scenes with our team. This month I thought I’d share my story with you, so I invited Claire to follow me for a day in the life of a lifestyle blogger and stylist!
Name: Louise Beukes
Where do you live? SW London
Describe your style?
‘My style is modern and feminine. I like classic styles made modern, so Ted Baker and Oliver Bonas are my go-to brands. I tend to stick to a base palette of neutral greys and layer pastel shades, florals and prints on top – that applies to my wardrobe, home décor and styling approach too!
What is your role at B.LOVED & what do you love about being part of the team?
As the Founder + Editor of B.LOVED, I love working with such a diverse team of talented and stylish ladies. While we all have running our own businesses in common, we’’ are also very different – we’re mums, business partners, fashionistas, wives, home makers, employees… the list goes on! That gives different team members the ability to see things from a different perspective, and help us to appeal to a wider audience of stylish ladies.
Do you have any other roles?
As well as running B.LOVED, I’’m a stylist and mentor for businesses in the wedding industry. I design and coordinate product, lifestyle and editorial shoots for some of my favourite brands, and help up-and-coming businesses succeed about the industry.
What’s your background, how did you get into what you do now?
After graduating with a degree in Interior Design, I worked in the corporate world for a decade designing offices for household names. While I enjoyed my job I eventually became disenchanted working with corporate brands. In 2010 I discovered blogs and opened my eyes to a new world of possibilities! I launched B.LOVED in 2011 alongside my full-time role and took the leap into self-employment in 2014! With a background in art and design, my passion lies in finding the most beautiful and stylish content to our readers – whether that’s gorgeous photography, trendy brands or creative inspiration.
What’s involved in a typical day at B.LOVED HQ?
My alarm generally goes off between 7-7.30am depending on what I’m doing that day. It takes me about 20 minutes to wake up, so the snooze button definitely gets pressed a few times! I use this time to check Facebook and Instagram, looking at the interaction we’ve had from our followers and commenting and liking our favourite accounts.
By 8am I’m in the shower and getting dressed before heading downstairs to make a cup of coffee using my trusty Nespresso machine. Without this I literally cannot function!
Breakfast is usually another cup of coffee and a slice of toast with either peanut butter or avocado, depending on how good I’m feeling! I sit at the dining table with my laptop for an hour or so with my coffee and enjoying the morning sunshine while catching up and filing emails before I head downstairs to the office.
I’m really lucky to have my own beautiful dedicated office space, although this will all change soon! It’ has double doors and a window looking out over the garden, so in the summer it’s a lovely place to work!
With white walls and a white desk, the space is a real blank canvas for displaying my favourite bits of pretty. There’s plenty of storage, so all my styling props and office junk gets hidden away neatly and even the printer is behind closed doors! I like to change things around regularly as I spot new things, displaying posters, quotes and smaller items on the Ikea shelf above my desk, and the latest magazines in a wire rack on the wall next to me for easy reference. I also have my schedule pinned to the wall alongside images from some of my favourite styled shoots. If I’m in the office all day, I’ll work on admin tasks all morning, tackling my inbox, preparing proposals or dealing with advertising enquiries.
I also spend a lot of time talking to my Assistant Editor, Claire, on Facebook messenger. We’re in almost constant contact, means we both know exactly what’s going on at all times and can react quickly to any queries or questions from our team, submissions or brands we’re working with.
I used to always miss lunch time and it could easily be 2 or 3pm before I’’d remember to eat! I’m getting better at this though, and if I’m in the office all day lunch tends to be something quick and easy that I can eat at my desk, like hummus, pitta and carrot sticks with my first coke zero fix of the day.
If I’m heading out of the office for the afternoon, I always try and plan a lunchtime meeting and will try and choose something relatively healthy like salad or soup. My fave lunchtime spots in London are the Riding House Café or Bill’s in Borough Market as they have a great selection of seasonal dishes (and power sockets for when I need to plug in!)
When I’m in the office, I reserve afternoons for ‘’fun’ tasks, like designing look books for my next shoot or writing blog posts. More often than not though, I’ll be out working on a shoot with one of our brand partners or creating some exclusive content with Claire and our team. Getting to explore London and it’s beautiful hidden venues is a massive perk of the job
On a shoot I’m responsible for overseeing the team and ensuring the shoot goals are met by– working closely with the photographer and suppliers to ensure we capture every detail and tell the story beautifully.
I try to finish work by 7pm, cook dinner and relax for a couple of hours with a movie or one of my favourite series. Of course, this isn’t always the case and if I have a week where I’m out of the office a lot during the day I’ll use the evenings to catch up on admin, arrange Skype calls with our partners and my mentoring clients. Other days I might have a catch up with my team over dinner and drinks, or an event to attend which means picking an on-brand outfit and getting out of the house looking presentable!
Dinner is usually something fresh and home made. When I have time I’ll cook a proper meal, usually pasta based, and freeze the leftovers so I have something healthy that can be reheated on a busier day (and resist the temptation to visit the local fish and chip shop!)
How do you stay inspired & motivated?
The industry is a constant source of inspiration – whether it’s picking up the latest issue of my favourite magazines for the hottest new trends, reading my fellow bloggers latest content, going through our submissions folder or meeting with an industry colleague to hear their news and latest projects, there is a real buzz and energy which is totally contagious! If I’m ever feeling down, stuck or in a negative place there’s a whole list of women I can call on to talk things through with, and by the end of my coffee I’ll be fired up and ready to take on my next new challenge!
What’s your biggest business challenge?
Achieving a proper work-life balance is my biggest challenge right now. B.LOVED will be celebrating it’’s 5 year birthday this year, and we have some exciting plans for the year ahead, but that means putting in the extra hours to make it happen. This will never be a job with regular hours – and I wouldn’t want it to be! – so it’s all about making my schedule work for me. At the moment that means making sure I take 2 full days off every week, and keep my schedule flexible the rest of the time. That means I might go out for shopping and cocktails with a girlfriend on a Tuesday afternoon and evening, but work a different evening instead! I try not to beat myself up too much about it, it’s all about making it work for you!
What are your goals for the next 12 months?
I’m working on a big project at the moment which I (frustratingly!) can’t quite reveal the details for yet, but let’s just say it’s going to be a place for the wedding community to come together. I’m really excited to be able to offer something completely fresh and unique, so watch this space. I’m also thrilled to be a founding member of Aisle Society, a collective of over 30 international wedding bloggers who are set to take the wedding world by storm in 2016! Our site launches soon, so keep an eye on www.aislesociety.com to be one of the first to see what it’s all about!
