REVIEW: THE BINGHAM HOTEL
In a Georgian town-house tucked away behind an old brick wall, on the banks of the River Thames, you’ll find Richmond’s boutique hotel the Bingham. Whether sipping champagne over afternoon tea on the balcony in summer, or enjoying a cosy cocktail or two in the lounge bar in winter, this family-run hotel is a real favourite of mine. So when I was invited to stay in one of their newly refurbished rooms just before Christmas, I knew it was the perfect excuse to take a night off and enjoy a little luxury. I was joined for the afternoon by photographer Fiona Kelly who captured the beautiful images throughout.
Moments away from the hustle and bustle of upmarket Richmond, the hotel has gorgeous views over the river and is also just a stone’s throw from historic Richmond Park, Kew’s botanical gardens and a short train ride into Central London, offering a different kind of city-break experience. It’s also a foodie’s haven; the Bingham has top gastronomic credentials, as do a number of restaurants locally including riverside steakhouse Gaucho’s and Petersham Nurseries’ greenhouse restaurant and café, both of which are well worth a visit on a longer trip!
The main areas of the hotel are decorated in a cosy style with leather, chandeliers and a touch of luxe, but it was the newly refurbished bedrooms I was excited to see! Designed with a contemporary Scandinavian feel, my room was light and airy without feeling cold – even on a chilly winter’s day – due to the fun pops of bright orange and yellow in the furniture and fittings. It provided a great place to work with a good-sized desk (a bugbear of mine) and stylish but comfy chairs with gorgeous views over the garden and river – perfect for sipping your morning coffee while pouring over one a local guide book.
As you’d expect from a small family-run hotel (there are only 15 rooms), the service was wonderfully personal with the whole team looking after me from start to finish and nothing too much trouble. I’ll certainly be coming back soon, perhaps for a special celebration or just a relaxing treat!
