TRAVEL INSPIRATION: ITHACA
In 2014, I travelled to the small island of Ithaca, Greece to photograph a friend’s wedding. Ever since then I’ve had a hankering to go back, so when I embarked on my year of travel in the summer of last year, Ithaca was one of the first destinations on my list. I’ve now been lucky enough to experience this island, it’s traditional culture and food, and friendly locals in Spring, Summer and Autumn and each time I’ve fallen in love a little more. So much so, that I now live on the island!
Destination: Ithaca, Greece.
Travel time: Approx 3 hour flight from London, then a 30-40 min ferry ride.
WHAT TO DO?
I would recommend doing a boat trip to Gidaki Beach. It is beautiful. If you are a bit adventurous, I would also recommend booking a hiking tour with Explore Ithaca. I did 2 different hikes and they were an awesome way to see the island in general, as well as seeing parts that you wouldn’t usually get to visit.
WHAT TO EAT
The summer season is the perfect time to visit the island. There are village festivals, which are held throughout the summer, where you will get to see and hear traditional music and dancing. So take your dancing shoes and be prepared to stay up late.
I love Greek food, but I would definitely suggest ordering taramasalata to start and then ask the waiter to suggest something. Be a bit adventurous.
The island is small and you won’t have a problem with getting lost but you will need a car if you want to make the most of your trip, as there is both the north and south parts of the island to explore
WHAT TO PACK
I have really fair skin so sun cream and moisturiser are always the first things I pack… but definitely take flip flops and bikinis – lots of bikinis. It’s so hot. You will live in them.
