A Magical Themed Wedding in Wonderland

The Story: This beautifully styled elopement will catch your fancy if you’re a fan of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland”. Be transported to a world of antique heirlooms, whimsical tea parties and old world charm. This shoot showcases creative unconventional ideas for your wedding day, like a pink tux and how to incorporate your favourite animal!

The Location: The quaint Duke Mansion in North Carolina. Built in 1915 and owned by James Buchanan Duke, the mansion has been a home and host to many 20th century leaders. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this venue has multiple locations for a wedding celebration and is full of beautifully decorated guest rooms.

The Vibe: A charming and whimsical tea party set up. A combination of soft pastels and vibrant colours are contrasted against evocative textures such as antique lace and bone china.

The Details:  Having a smaller wedding with fewer guests can allow extra budget for some wedding detail splurge. The bridal party (including the intimate group of guests) all had two looks. The bride had one gown fit for a picturesque reception and elegant tea and the second was a ball gown extension of the first dress. Both had intricate detailing from the etched glitter, to the 3D white florals and beaded straps. These were complemented by the bride’s velvet, dusty blue heels with 3D embellishments that mirrored the blue heirloom china on the tablescape. Beyond the ceremony, there was a tiny garden full of whimsy that gave all the “Wonderland” vibes.

Tips & Highlights:

  • Animals can be a fun and therapeutic addition to your special day.
  • The fresh colour palette (magentas, soft blues and purple) which perfectly matched the mansion’s hydrangeas in full bloom. Create a unique bridal portrait by lying in a simple bed of flowers (place them by the stem or bulb in an arrangement on the ground in a clean space).
  • Custom tea tags attached to bags of tea made perfect, and affordable, personalised DIY place cards.
