An Elegant Palatial Destination Wedding in Portugal
The Story: Canadians, Derek and Raquel, knew that a destination wedding was the right choice for them. Raquel’s parents are from the Azores and she manages a family-run jewellery business that imports Portuguese jewellery so the couple had an obvious connection with Portugal. If they were going to fly their guests halfway around the world, they wanted to find somewhere truly special. And they did!
The Location: Palácio Marquês de Fronteira is a privately owned museum-house. It is still the residence of the Marquis which adds a life unusual to most palaces and it’s a place full of hidden stories and treasures. Some of the rooms and spaces located inside the Fronteira Palace, in the Liberal Arts Terrace and in the gardens, can be rented for a variety of events, as long as these events do not interfere with the integrity and preservation of this historical monument. It has some of the most incredible tiles and so many hidden meanings in its displays that it feels magical to unveil these little secrets. And if by any chance this doesn’t move you, the gardens and the palace itself, located just 10 minutes from Lisbon, are simply breathtaking!
The Vibe: Classic, elegant and full of palatial charm. The only word to describe this destination wedding is EPIC. This event was styled to perfection from the bridal party’s look to the fabulous al fresco tablescape on the terrace. It was as much a celebration of Portugal as it was of Raquel and Derek as the couple wanted to make sure this was a night that neither they nor their guests would forget in a hurry.
The Details: The wedding invitations created using Minted were wax sealed and accompanied by a sprig of Rosemary in each envelope completed with a vintage Portuguese stamp from a collector that the couple discovered on Etsy. This touch evoked the sense of bringing Portugal to the guests from the very beginning. When they got to Portugal, Raquel and Derek took great care to coordinate the décor to match the palace’s grandeur without becoming too formal. They incorporated Portuguese elements such as tiles gifted to their guests and referenced the unique detail of the palace’s terrace.
- Raquel is an Art History graduate who loves art. In choosing the Palácio Marquês de Fronteira as their venue, the couple were able to infuse a part of themselves into their destination wedding.
- A formal venue, such as a palace or chateau, doesn’t mean you can’t let loose and have some fun with your guests. This wedding had the perfect balance of formal and fun. Raquel said: “It was an incredibly memorable and magical experience for us. It was a perfect day that had a great balance between a classy, elegant affair that ended with an incredible party.”
- Your wedding day can whizz past and be over before you know. Remember to take a few intimate moments together to appreciate the day. Derek and Raquel stepped away shortly after they had been welcomed to their table by their guests at the reception. This was one of their most memorable moments of the day.
