b. is for Business: What is styling for business and how can it help you?

Happy weekend lovelies and welcome to a new feature on b.loved! b. for business is aimed at hard-working wedding industry professionals who, like me, sometimes need a little help and advice in running their business.  I don’t profess to know everything, far from it, but I will be sharing some of the lessons I’ve learnt and some of my design and styling experience with you in the hope that it might help! I’d love this monthly post to become a little conversational, so feel free to share your thoughts, comments and questions below.

Over the past 2 ½ years of running b.loved I’ve been lucky to meet so many talented and creative people, with amazing products and services to share with my brides.  The one thing that frustrates me the most is when I’m shown beautiful products, followed by an email containing product shots with lacklustre photography and non-existent styling.  I have a pretty high standard of quality on the blog, and having to turn down features simply because the imagery is not right is heart breaking.  I know you’ve put a lot of time and effort in to creating the perfect brand and the perfect product, you’re 90% of the way there, so don’t let the final 10% let you down!

Why do you need great images?  Two-fold. Editors need strong, editorial images to create striking layouts on their blog or in their magazine.  Brides want to be able to see the detail and understand the quality just from the style of image.  Get this combination right and you’re on to a winner – great images that will get published and brides will love. Meaning you’ll sell more, which let’s be honest, is what it’s all about!  W

How do you do that? Well, first of all you need to know the difference between 2 types of product shot – a cut-out, usually shot against a plain background which can literally be ‘cut out’ for use in magazine or blog features, and lifestyle where the product is styled a real-life setting.

Today, I’m going to focus on lifestyle shots which tend to be the type of images I am looking for when putting together features.  The reason?  Brides like to be inspired, and they like to be able to see your product in a real life situation.  Hence wedding blogs, and real wedding features are so popular!  Think about how a bride is likely to use your product on their wedding day, what is their wedding style, colours, theme and how does your product work within that? These are all the things I consider when styling a product or inspiration shoot – it could be your letter-pressed place cards elegantly displayed on a pretty place setting in muted tones, complete with linen napkin, crystal glassware and vintage cutlery, or your beautifully embellished headpiece displayed in the curls of a beautifully made up model.

And it’s not just the individual images that you need to consider, but how every image in your collection works together and communicates your brand’s style.  Take Propose PR, for whom I styled a selection of lifestyle images for their website re-launch last year.  Nicola wanted to include her brand colours – tiffany blue, white and blush pink, with some of her personality – sparkly diamanté, as well as communicating a sense of luxury and elegance.  Using a selection of 10-15 different set ups, we created a series of images that are powerful individually and as a collection, with a common colour palette and theme running throughout.

Other examples of beautiful imagery can be seen at Victoria Millésime, who chose a particular style of photography to suit her feminine, vintage-inspired brand, and BerinMade, whose whimsical hand painted stationery designs have each been exquisitely styled to sell each look perfectly.

If you’re looking to take your business to the next level and get your products noticed (we know they’re fab, we just need to show the world!) then you need to showcase them with powerful editorial images.  And because I love you I’m offering a special styling package to any business in the wedding industry that gets in touch before 30th June 2013.  This includes a consultation – to get to know you, your brand and your requirements – a design board, prop & product sourcing, and 4 hours of on the day styling for just £250!

After a decade-long career in corporate interior design, I took a giant leap of faith, left the security of an office job, and founded B.LOVED in 2011 as a platform for romantic and beautiful wedding inspiration. Thanks to a whole lot of creativity, hard work and passion, my gamble paid off and B.LOVED became one of the leading wedding blogs in the UK.

You’ll also find me working as an Editorial Stylist, where I design and curate beautiful photoshoots for wedding and lifestyle brands, as well as contributing as a founding member of bridal inspiration hub Aisle Society, and running wedding industry community the B.LOVED Hive from our super pretty base in London. Yep, I definitely have the best job in the world.
