A Breathtaking Santorini Elopement

“…like that star of the waning summer who beyond all stars rises bathed in the ocean stream to glitter in brilliance.”

This passage was taken from Homer’s famous epic novel, The Iliad

Few could fail to be moved by this spellbinding passage. The beauty of Greek mythology formed a key element of the inspiration for this shoot. This elegant (yet simultaneously appearing effortless) editorial shoot incorporated different concepts from modern mythology, particularly those gorgeous lines describing Santorini and the bright blue Aegean Sea.

The island of Santorini is known all over the world as one of the most picture-perfect ocean view hotspots in Europe. With the crisp white walls of its buildings with their iconic contrasting bold blue roofs, all set against the endless stretch of sea that provides the backdrop, it’s no surprise that this particular viewpoint has provided a photo opportunity for countless newlywed couples. In fact, thanks to its stunning natural beauty, the island is also known as “Kalliste”, which translates as ‘the most beautiful’.

This workshop conducted by Rebecca Carpenter was artfully planned to an absolute T. The day started with bridal preparations based in Santorini’s magnificent Grace Hotel, with a view overlooking the volcanoes and the Aegean Sea, which makes nervous couples anticipating the upcoming ceremony feel (quite literally) as though they are on top of the world.

The small elopement took place on the terrace of the hotel. The local workshop planners knew that a sunrise shoot would be the perfect time to photograph the ancient town. The team almost had the entire town to themselves—the couple even had time to steal away for a morning sea swim.

Then in the evening, utilising the gorgeous light that golden hour provided, the couple’s shoot started on the hotel terrace surrounded by candles and flowers, before heading down the volcano with its epic views of the island.

Valentina from The Stars Inside incorporated a huge number of intricate details. Each of these individual elements spoke to the theme of modern mythology, including the cake from The Cakers, the bride’s Grecian goddess gown made by Morgan Davies Bridal, and the stationery by Paige & Co, with its gold detailing and ocean-inspired design.

An abundance of flowers adorned the ceremony, including Calla lilies, blue hydrangeas and white roses across the intimate wedding tablescape. The table was finished with locally made decorations, including natural materials that could be found on the island (like marble and glass vases), and handmade Greek pots labelled with the bride’s and groom’s place settings.
