love shoot #17: intimate island {cynthia & dali}

Welcome back for part two of my double-deluxe St Maarten treat.  If you missed part one, Cynthia & Dali’s sunkissed pre-wedding shoot then check it out here!

Cynthia is truly a bride after my own heart, a graphic designer for Ikea, she had strong ideas for the styling and branding of their day.  She designed their invitations based on a vintage airplane ticket and even made her own statement necklace, veil and fascinator!

The day was photographed A Brit & A Blonde.  an amazingly talented couple with a background in advertising, they know just how to get the right shot, capturing the love and light of this gorgeous couple!

We chose to get married in St. Maarten because we both love the island and it was where we got engaged (we had also switched venues three times prior because we couldn’t make our parents happy!) Having a destination wedding was the best idea.

It was important to me that it was a meaningful, small and intimate celebration. We both agreed that for it to be special did not necessarily require spending a lot of money. Weddings in Toronto usually start at $20,000+ with hundreds of people, which seems like a lot of money to spend on one day and with too many people whom we’d never get to really spend time with. We both wanted a simple, romantic and meaningful day celebrating with our closest family and friends.

I love sparkly things, so I chose a dress with lots of sparkle. For dinner, I changed into a shorter light dress.

Coming from art school, I admit I was very particular about the styling/branding of the day. I really love simplicity, and hand-made DIY and natural elements. I really wanted to avoid the overdone giant red and gold Chinese wedding. I’m not into lavish styling, preferring the less is more approach. We made a lot of the elements ourselves since I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted, it was cost effective, and I knew exactly how to make things. I found a lot of beautiful and inspirational photos at snippetandink.

What was your first dance, and how did you choose the song?

With only 15 people in our wedding party, we didn’t have a dance floor. We spent hours choosing music for the ceremony and cocktails & hors d’oeurves evening. We went to take photos in Phililpsburg while our guests enjoyed the food and drinks after the ceremony. We chose Ben E. King’s Stand by Me for the start of the ceremony, Coeur de Pirate’s La Vie est Ailleurs for the walk down the aisle, and Bob Marley’s One Love for after the ceremony. We chose an eclectic mix of happy music for the beach.

Any advice for future brides?

Have your wedding exactly how you want it, but don’t be too controlling as it will stress you out, just enjoy. Also be conscious of how fast the day goes by!

Cynthia & Dali, I hope your marriage is as sunkissed as the island you married on.

After a decade-long career in corporate interior design, I took a giant leap of faith, left the security of an office job, and founded B.LOVED in 2011 as a platform for romantic and beautiful wedding inspiration. Thanks to a whole lot of creativity, hard work and passion, my gamble paid off and B.LOVED became one of the leading wedding blogs in the UK.

I'm also a co-founder at The Brand Studio, where I design and curate beautiful photoshoots for wedding and lifestyle brands, as well as running wedding industry community the B.LOVED Hive where I support and nurture wedding pros building industry leading businesses. Yep, I definitely have the best job in the world.
