love shoot #44: timeless elegance {wynand & angelique}

I’m so glad to finally share today’s wedding,  it’s one full of all those delicious little details that always get me excited!  Wynand and Angelique’s wedding in South Africa was a vintage-inspired affair, with family heirlooms and belongings becoming the center pieces of their day.  The gorgeous, rich & warm colours they chose, the pearls and the lace all add to a sense of timeless elegance.

The gorgeous images were captured by Jacques, of Real Simple Photography.

Angelique sent me their story ~

We both worked as apprentices at quite a large company and saw each other each day, but never really took notice of one another – until my good old email account failed me and I needed the assistance of someone “in the know”.  He was making coffee in the kitchen area at work, with his lunchbox in his hand, when we first spoke and the rest as they say, is history – which has clearly lead to a very exciting future.  As for the proposal…

He wanted to surprise me, which is quite a task, especially when you live together.  He took me out for lunch at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town – the expectations were running high, but he didn’t propose.  You can imagine my disappointment.  But, he pushed through, dealt with my bad mood for the rest of the day and waited to execute his original plan.  He waited for me to fall asleep, lit some candles, went down on one knee next to my bedside, woke me up and proposed.  He did it, he surprised me!

The most important thing was to keep it traditional enough to still feel like a wedding, but to change the feel of the day to be less formal, less predictable and try and add personal touches to everything.We had our ceremony at a beautiful Dutch Reformed Church, we loved the architecture and stained glass windows. The reception followed at a local restaurant called Pistachio.  It’s such a beautiful restaurant that we just needed to add some of our own personal items and the atmosphere was set.  That was the most fun part of planning the wedding, thinking of ways to incorporate special details such as the typewriter, the “Angelique” books, the old encyclopaedias, the photos, etc.  We included lots of lace and pearls to tie everything together.  Once we had decided on our theme, everything started to fall into place and the old dusty things our parents kept on a shelf in the garage became priceless pieces of art.

My favourite personal touch was the KitKat that we gave our guests between the Church ceremony and the lunch at Pistachio!  We wanted them to “have a break” (have a kitkat!) since that was the only time we had to take photos and they had to wait for us.  We also surprised all our lady guests with a pearl bracelet hanging from the stem of their champagne glass when it was time to make the toast.  We had the Groom’s exquisite selection of our favourite movie theme songs as well as our favourite classics by Harry Connik Jnr and Michael Buble to add to the atmosphere

Any advice for future brides?

Take time to relax before your big day.  Remember to thank your mother and your bridesmaids, they have done so much for you, and if they’re anything like mine, things you don’t even know about!

I’ve loved sharing your day Wynand and Angelique! I love the ‘Angelique’ books you included in your day, and here’s to another beautiful ‘Angelique in Love’ story…
