Maretha & Johan’s Eco-Friendly Johannesburg Wedding

Good morning brides!  *Yawn* Thank goodness it’s Wednesday already!  After a delayed overnight flight, an overflowing inbox and a minor car accident to sort out (I’m ok, the car has a little war wound… ooops!) my thoughts are already turning to the weekend.  Although I’ll be working I know it’s going to be a fun one – I’m meeting one of my couples for an inspiration session and them catching up with the b.team. Two hours of pouring over pretty images, inspirations and ideas for their wedding over tea & cake, followed by a few more hours of tea & cake and possibly a few bubbles. Yes, I call that work ;)

To get us one step closer to the weekend however, today I’m delighted to share Maretha & Johan’s unique wedding.  Needless to say, I’m a pretty big fan of the work of all my b.loved sponsors – so when sponsor Stella Uys sent me an email along the lines of ‘take a look at this little gem’ I held my breath as I clicked the link… and ooohed and aaahed my way through the most emotional of weddings!

Maretha & Johan’s day was inspired by relaxed simplicity and an eco-friendly theme.  Oh the details – where to start?! Bride Maretha wore a simple Pronovias dress accessorised with a dainty hair vine, adding a boho-vibe to her look. Bridesmaids added structure in their stripy blue & white dresses while the bouquets & table arrangements {oh, hello  beautiful bouquets!!} were big and messy and rustic, incorporated herbs grown in their own garden as well as locally grown flowers & foliage. Their day was a DIY affair, with Maretha’s Dad fashioning tables from old wood and scaffolding, stationery designed & made by the bride {with a hanging floral motif brought to life in their decor!} and biodegradable or recycled items used as far as possible.  Oh, and it’s all held in a freeform tent. Officially Love.

Johan and I both studied at the University of Stellenbosch. We met through friends during our first year of studies, but were in other relationships at that time. During my last year I left Stellenbosch for 6 months. When I returned there were very few of our peers left. Luckily Johan was still there and single! Yeah! So it was obvious that we were meant to be!  Johan proposed to me when we went hiking in Swaziland (Malolotja Nature Reserve). It is a beautiful mountainous area. We stopped for a coffee break. He took me to a rock in the middle of the river and asked me to be his wife! Woohoo!!!We were in such a remote place, I had to say yes to get out again!

Finding a dress was incredibly easy! I fitted 5 dresses and bought the 5th. I always refused to have an off shoulder wedding dress and although it wasn’t the dress I always had in mind, the moment I put in on, it felt like mine. :) I think it is best to shop for a dress without any preconceived ideas.

We got married at my parent’s house in Johannesburg. Our venue was a actually a big inspiration. The ceremony was in our garden and the reception was on the tennis court. We wanted a very relaxed and chilled wedding and the venue lent itself to be just that. I also wanted the wedding to have an earthy, DIY feeling to it, so we had biodegradable plates and paper place mats. A lot of herbs and tables made from scaffolding and shutter board.

Favourite moment

The day was really filled with favourite moments. The whole ceremony was so special – I couldn’t stop crying! Johan’s speech of course. Walking in with my dad. Seeing everyone enjoying the wedding… but if I must choose a favourite it must be the moment when we walked into the reception area for the first time. We had “All Day and All Night” by The Kinks play at that moment and the spirit of all our guests was incredible!

First Dance

From the first moment of being engaged Johan wanted to dance on “I Will” by The Beatles. I think he knew it since he was a little boy dreaming about his perfect wedding! ;)

Advice

Everyone told me that it is the most amazing time! I don’t think I really believed them until everything was over, but now I know it is true! It is such a wonderful moment in one’s life! So my only advice is to do whatever is possible to remember every step of getting married! And stress is stupid! :) Oh! And get someone to make a video of the day.

Louise

After a decade-long career in corporate interior design, I took a giant leap of faith, left the security of an office job, and founded B.LOVED in 2011 as a platform for romantic and beautiful wedding inspiration. Thanks to a whole lot of creativity, hard work and passion, my gamble paid off and B.LOVED became one of the leading wedding blogs in the UK.

You’ll also find me working as an Editorial Stylist, where I design and curate beautiful photoshoots for wedding and lifestyle brands, as well as contributing as a founding member of bridal inspiration hub Aisle Society, and running wedding industry community the B.LOVED Hive from our super pretty base in London. Yep, I definitely have the best job in the world.
