real wedding: an autumnal farm wedding {brethia & johann}

When I received the submission of today’s GORGEOUS real wedding from Wesley Vorster, I did a little desk dance!  Brethia and Johann’s wedding, at her family farm just North of Cape Town, makes the absolute best of the local area, the stunning setting in the valley surrounded by a mountain range glowing orange in the late Autumn light and the rustic atmosphere of their venue providing the perfect backdrop to locally sourced flowers and foliage. And it’s full of totally covetable details, coloured wineglasses, flower-filled hanging glass baubles, antique silver and thoughtful touches.  There’s a lot going on, but Brethia cleverly brought their day together with a very muted colour palette of dusty pinks, purples and greens, adding warmth and cosiness to their day (despite the rain!)

When I went to University, family of mine said that they know about a very cool guy going to the same varsity campus as me, and suggested that I have to meet him! So after a very awkward first introduction, we spent the whole night chatting around the campfire, after which Johann said to his friends that one day he will “date that girl” And so our story began. Fun times, sad times, studying, exams, trips overseas, long distance, family holidays, laughter, tears…all of these things shaped our path! After 7 years of dating, on a beautiful winters night, Johann blindfolded me and lead me to a stunning restaurant next to the Eersteriver in Stellenbosch, which he booked out just for us! And so in his usual romantic way he wrote a love poem for me and in the candle light, went on one knee and asked me to marry him. And of course I said YES!

I had my dress made by the wonderful Elizabeth Stockenstroom. I chose her, because of the wonderful way she works with lace, and WOW, was I happy with the end result! I bought my bridesmaid dresses almost 6 months before the wedding and that just made it much easier than having something made! Johann had a beautiful custom tailored suit and him and all the groomsmen wore brown leather braces. I loved the groomsmen outfits with the combination of grey and brown. In the end the bridesmaid and groomsmen outfits formed a nice harmony,which I think is very important for you overall feel.

For both of us, the walk down the aisle was very special. For me the special moment of walking in the arm of my dad with my soon to be husband waiting at the end. And for Johann it was frustrating at first, because he said from where he stood, when all the guests stood up, he couldn’t see me. So he just marched closer, almost into the aisle so that he can see me and to him nothing comes close to that feeling.

I grew up on a wine farm in the Slanghoek Valley and we were very privileged to get married there on a beautiful Autumn day. We had our ceremony in our beautiful church in town and then had the reception in a tent set up next to our cellar. Luckily the overcast weather made it a picture perfect day with just enouhg drizzle in the morning to bless our day! I would describe our theme as vintage/romantic with a touch of rustic farm! Me and my mother planned most of the wedding and we found most of our inspiration on wedding blogs and magazines.

When we started to plan the wedding I said to my mom I would love to have lots of different flowers in varieties of soft and “dirty” pinks, purples and greens, AND that I really wanted purple wine glasses!(makes a great statement on a table) And then that became our colour scheme. We used a lot of flowers from our garden and “veld” flowers around, and made lots of ribbon flowers and wooden and fynbos hearts that was used for decoration. Because the wedding was on our farm, there was a lot of help from family, the in-laws and close friends, from doing flowers, setting tables, putting together lounge areas and making sure that everybody helping is getting fed. And all the hard work paid off in the end, making this day more than we could ever imagine.

What was your first dance, and how did you choose the song?
With our first song, we decided that we want to set the tone of the party spirit and don’t want a mainstream slow wedding song. So we chose “Jump” from Girls Aloud and we loved it!!! Was so much fun!

What advice would you give couples planning their wedding?
Browse through all the blogs and magazines and then choose something you like and stick to it. Otherwise it just gets confusing! And then it’s all about planning! My mom had excel spreadsheets for everything, and in the end that re ally helped when you have it all together. And then it is definitely important to just enjoy it. Take time during the day to pause with your partner and just take everything in!
