real wedding: beach chic {jennifer & shaun}

Words cannot even begin to describe how beautiful today’s real wedding is! Described by the gorgeous bride Jennifer as ‘beach chic’, everything from the dress to the decor is relaxed and elegant beach wedding perfection! Gorgeous couple, Jennifer and Shaun, exchanged vows on the beautiful white beach at Strandkombuis (which literally translates to ‘beach kitchen’) a stunning venue on the Atlantic coast just north of Cape Town, which I LOVE (in fact, we even considered it for our own wedding!).  The combination of rustic, seaside details and simple yet elegant succulent and gypsophilia floral arrangements add to the laid-back beach vibe.

Their photographer, Cape Town-based Catherine Mac, deserves a special mention.  This is one exceptionally talented young lady, who’s ability to capture the essence of a couple through her images, the details, the atmosphere and the emotion in a clean, natural and elegant style completely blows me away. Every. Single. Time.

Here’s the beautiful bride Jennifer with the story of their day ~

Perhaps you could call it destiny or fate, we met when we were just 3 years old! We were neighbours, and again in a new suburb at the age of 15. We attended the same high school but ran in different circles.  It was only when we attended the same college that the sparks really began to fly. Here we are 8 years later newly married!!!  The proposal was in true Jennifer & Shaun style. He whisked me off on a surprise couple of days away to the Kruger National Game Reserve. He organised everything, all accommodation, food etc.  The first night we were having a local South African braai (barbeque) at our chalet, very casual and laid back. As I was turning the meet on the fire, he called me and I turned around to find him on one knee. He popped the question and I said YES!!!

I was not really one of those brides who had their whole wedding planned by the age of 13, all I knew was that it would most definitely be a beach wedding.  My longest friend and bridesmaid who now lives in London emailed me a link of the venue, and I just fell in love with it instantly. After visiting the venue I knew I had to have it, it was perfect.

    Being the casual, down to earth couple that we are, we knew we didn’t want anything pretentious. The main aim was to celebrate our special day with close family and friends, and just make sure everyone had a fantastic and memorable time. We wanted something casual, yet sophisticated. We decided on “beach-chic”, with a rustic but classy feel.

I personally love doing DIY projects. So when it came to the wedding I made any excuse to “DIY SOMETHING”. Our place names and chalkboard signs we made our selves with wooden board and chalk board paint. We also beach washed the wooden words with diluted white paint.There was no specific part of the day that was my favourite; the whole day was just pure bliss. I enjoyed every single minute of. I could not have asked for anything more, absolute perfection!!!

What was your first dance, and how did you choose the song?

We both love the movie The Notebook and have always really enjoyed the song ‘Feels Like Home’ by Chantal Kreviazuk which features in that movie. As a couple we never really had a song, but in the end this song is now OUR song.

Do you have any advice for couples currently planning their wedding?

My advice would be to enjoy the planning process, everything goes by so quickly you need to just step back and take it all in. Make a file to keep clippings of everything that catches your eye as well as keep you organised.  To me the most important thing was choosing a great photographer, remember the photos are what remain long after the day is over.
