real wedding: beautifully british botanicals {hayley & richard}

I’m so thrilled to share a wedding today from one of my favourite photographers and b.loved friend, Fiona Kelly.  Hayley and Richard’s wedding has so many elements I adore, from the heartfelt ceremony and elegant champagne reception in the beautiful setting of Cambridge Cottage, Kew Gardens and the beautiful botanical-inspired decor as a nod to the venue in pretty and fresh spring colours.  A wedding with children at it’s heart is always filled with joy, and Hayley and Richard went beyond expectations to include all their young guests with a fun crafty interlude between the ceremony and meal.  Fiona’s images capture every emotional moment with easy, natural style.

Here’s their story ~

A mutual friend introduced us at an after works drinks evening in a London pub. She had met Richard on a flight to New York, thought he was an interesting guy and decided to introduce him to her single friends… thank you Kate!  Richard proposed on a beautiful beach while on holiday in South Africa, in the short window between dinner time and bath time of our 11 month old toddler while Granny babysat!

We kissed a lot of frogs when picking our venue! We wanted a London wedding and fell in love with Cambridge Cottage, Kew Gardens (the 10th venue we’d viewed!)  With my dress, however, I loved it the moment I tried it on!  It blew my budget but I decided that nothing else would match it. It was fitted in all the right places and skimmed all the other bits. I liked that is was locally designed and made by a local seamstress.

We didn’t have a theme apart from blending tradition with quirkiness to reflect our personalities and we had many personal touches. Lots of friends helped and contributed to the day. Flowers were chosen from an Oxfordshire flower farm and a florist friend arranged them as her gift to us, another kind friend designed and paid for the invitations and place settings. A friend composed a piece of music and sang it during our ceremony and for our first dance. We wrote our own vows one night over dinner and Richard wrote a special poem for the ceremony and his best man wrote a wonderful, amusing poem for the best man’s speech which he delivered superbly.

What was your first dance, and how did you choose the song?

Do you have any advice for couples currently planning their wedding?

As long as you are happy on the day, your guests will be too. Think about what’s important to you – it’s your day. Spend money on things that are important to you and skimp on things that aren’t. Do invite children, they add love and joy to the day. Do let people wear what they would like to wear. Do consider seating people next to people you think they would like and enjoy talking to rather than following a traditional seating arrangement. Choose a good caterer – ours were fantastic and made the day run like clockwork without any intrusion or stress. Choose a venue that allows you to have the day you want.
