It always makes me smile when I get emails from b.loved readers who have just returned from honeymoon and can’t wait to share their wedding pictures with me and, of course, you!  Susan got in touch to tell me all about her sunny South African wedding to soul mate Burger, at the beautiful Kleinevalliej estate.  In her original email to me, Susan admitted to feeling lost when initially beginning her wedding planning, and I am sure there are many of you reading this right now nodding your heads in agreement.  Susan and Burger’s wedding is proof that it does, and will, all come together perfectly!

This super cute couple, both from South Africa, but now living in London, chose to tie the knot with family and friends where they grew up in the Winelands, near Cape Town.  Susan’s vision for their day was to create something unique and personal, choosing a bright yellow colour scheme and considering every little detail, from personalised favours to popcorn confetti and a dramatic wedding dress covered in beautiful crystals!  Their day was all captured by photographer Abri Kruger.

Susan shares their story ~

It all started 7 years ago in a small town on the western coast of south Africa called ‘Kleinzee’ . Burger was on a 3 month vacation from the UK visiting his family and I happened to be visiting my parents there at the same time.  We met through mutual friends at a bar (yes I know …out of all places…a bar???) but what started out as a mutual meet and greet turned into a night we would never forget!! We sat chatting away till the early hours of the morning, around a bonfire on the beach, whilst staring at the stars and sharing our life stories.  Three months later I climbed on board the flight to London and started my life with my best friend, my sole mate, my everything!!!

On my birthday, we invited a few friends to join us for dinner at my favourite Greek restaurant in London. After a joyful meal, lots of laughter and whilst having some fun breaking plates in true Greek style…..I turned around and noticed Burger on the floor, on his knee, very nervous, ery serious!! At first I froze- not knowing what to do, I knew he was about to propose, but I stood staring in absolute awe! He sat there for what he says felt like an eternity waiting for me to step nearer…and finally when I did, the the ring was placed on my finger and I burst into tears!! What started as a birthday celebration turned into an engagement party and it was soooo special! Many engaged couples say they are in such shock on the night of their engagement that they hardly remember the detail, but I was lucky to have all my dearest friends there… every emotion, every moment, every smile was captured on  camera! Definitely a birthday I will never forget!!

My dress had to be ivory, had to be strapless, big but not too fluffy, and have loads of Swarovski crystals on!  It was the first dress I tried in the shop, and the only one!! 10 minutes later it was ordered and bought!!  It came all the way from America, custom made to my measurements which took a long time, but it arrived a whole 18 months before our wedding!  It was everything I ever dreamed of and more!!

The best emotion I have ever experiences was walking down the aisle next to my fathers side and seeing Burger’s chin wobble with emotion! I know its every brides fear to start crying at her wedding and spoil her make up – but I didn’t mind…true emotion took over and I bawled my eyes out during my vows!!

I always knew what I pictured my wedding day to be like, white walls, white floor, clean crisp and elegant!! Somewhere unique, somewhere special, and that could capture a special meaning to us both.  When I came across Kleinevalleij estate, near Paarl where we had both been to school, I knew this was the place I would one day get married! Once I was engaged the venue was the first thing I booked!! After two years of planning and countless late nights on blogs and websites, my dream came true!  I didn’t pick a specific theme for our wedding, all we knew was that we are didn’t want a stiff, over the top wedding.  We wanted something fun, yet fresh and elegant,  so we chose to add a few personalised special things that meant something to us into our day.  I had my favourite colour,  yellow, as the main colour. I knew with a summer wedding it would look stunning – and it did!  My favourite snack is popcorn- which we had as confetti.  I love crystals and incorporated Swarovski crystals into our centre pieces and my wedding dress was covered in them too! Burger loves music so we chose to use a metal CD box as part of our wedding invitation, which I made.  In fact most of the décor and stationery was made by me!

What was your first dance, and how did you choose the song?

Snow Patrol is one of our favourite bands! We listen to them regularly and wanted something we could relate to for our dance so we chose “Chasing Cars”.  Not your traditional first dance song- but it means something special to the two of us and we loved our choice!

I also loved doing our Father Daughter dance! My dad is so young spirited, a fun and joyful man! We knew doing a slow traditional dance would not reflect our personalities. so instead we chose to mix up a medley of 4 songs and do our own quirky funny moves and improvise. his trade mark ‘ air guitar ‘ moves left everyone in hysterical laughter.  The medley ended with “Butterfly Kisses” and as the words…”one last hug…daddys little girl….” came on-  my father hugged me tighly and said I love you my sweetiepie!! It was sooooo special and a moment I will never forget!
