real wedding: southern charm {chrissy & preston}

Today’s real wedding comes all the way from Texas y’all!  Chrissy & Preston’s southern celebration is full of Southern charm, from the quaint timber clad barn on the ‘John Wayne Trail’, cute signs, candlelight and a wedding breakfast served from a wagon (hell yeh!) their day is filled with authentic rustic props and DIY details.  Their day was captured by Kayla and Wendi of Houston-based photography team Simply Love Photography.

Our love story reads like the script of the newest romantic comedy.  You see, this wasn’t the first time Preston and I have walked the aisle together on wedding day.  On November 28, 2009, my best friend married his best friend and the two matchmakers partnered Preston and I to walk down the aisle together, on a hunch that we would hit it off.  They were abundantly right.  Preston was living in Champaign, Illinois, attending graduate school, and I was back in Texas.  So, we began a nearly 2 year, long distance courtship.  When Preston proposed in December of 2011, we immediately started planning our summer wedding in Texas. Preston slipped the ring on my finger on a Friday night and Saturday morning I called Old Glory Ranch.  I had run across the venue online while helping a friend plan her wedding and fell in love with the rustic décor, rolling hills and open Texas skies, partnered with the abundant outdoor patio space which seemed perfect for a summer evening celebration.

Preston and I were lucky enough to spend the entire week leading up to our wedding with our family and friends, many of whom scheduled their summer vacations around our big day.  My vision for our wedding was rustic elegance. I imagined a mix of worn and western with lush and beautiful.  The hardwood floors and wrought iron fixtures were complemented by white lace table linens and chandeliers hanging from trees.  All of the flowers were shades of blush and ivory, with accents of berries and thistles to contrast and pull in the bridesmaids’ dresses.  I spent hours scouring bridal magazines and websites…and Pinterest became my obsession!  I loved the romantic, feminine feel of the soft colors and full bouquets, but when I saw the blue thistles in a bouquet pinned on Pinterest, I fell in love! Since family is so important to both Preston and I, we knew that we wanted to incorporate a few special handmade touches.  My sister, my cousin, and I constructed a family tree display adorned with crystals and beads to showcase our loved ones during the cocktail hour on the patio.  As favors, guests left with homemade jars of raspberry jalapeno jelly that my mother, sister, and I had made and canned.

When we first began planning, Preston and I discussed how we wanted our wedding to feel for our guests.  We both wanted our wedding to be more than visually appealing; we wanted our guests to get a full experience.  So, one of the most important things to me was embracing the country setting, without seeming kitschy or cheesy.  We chose subtle bluegrass music for our prelude and even for the ceremony…I think it created a more relaxed feeling and was a little playful, just like us!

Our favorite part of the wedding was spending so much quality time with our loved ones.  Since everyone had travelled to be with us, we spent most of the week leading up to the wedding together.  The wedding day was very relaxed and stress free and we got to enjoy a delicious meal and fun party with some of our nearest and dearest.

What was your first dance, and how did you choose the song?

Our first dance was to “Nothing Fancy” by Dave Barnes.  I have always loved Dave Barnes and this song was perfectly sweet and simple and just fit us very well.

Do you have any advice for couples currently planning their wedding?

Choose vendors with experience, and that you can trust.  The folks at Old Glory Ranch did a wonderful job of taking care of every single detail.  We met with them several times and they really made sure that they knew everything that should happen and made sure our big day ran smoothly.  Our photographers, Simply Love Photography, did a wonderful job as well.  We had discussed with them the pictures that were most important to us and they did a wonderful job of making sure all of those shots were taken, gathering family and friends, without our prompting or asking.  It felt like having friends there with us capturing our day!  So, be sure you choose vendors with experience and vendors who will really listen to your vision.  And, take time to enjoy the time!  We made a whole week out of it…most of our bridal party took their vacation to come spend a week in the Hill Country with us!  So, we were able to spend a lot of time making good memories
