Suzaan & Sollie’s pretty peony-filled wedding
Morning lovelies! While the UK wedding season is quiet and you busy spring & summer brides tie up all of those last-minute details, let us indulge in some wedding pretty from incredible South African photographer Stella Uys. In fact ‘wedding pretty’ is a slight understatement today. Suzaan & Sollie’s day is undoubtedly the prettiest pink wedding you ever-did-see, filled with the blousey, ruffley gorgeousness of hundreds of peonies, and simply oozing romance!! Set in the Free State, where it hardly ever rains, their love was blessed from the heavens, creating some gorgeous, atmospheric couple shots with the dramatic landscape contrasting with the delicate details of their day. The contemporary white venue, and beautiful handmade details are the stuff wedding dreams are made of (at least my dreams) and they suit sweet little Suzaan to an absolute T.
She describes their day so much better than me ~
It all happened in December 2008 when I was on holiday with a few friends on the south coast of South Africa. Little did I know that this fun holiday was going to end off even better than I had ever imagined! As I was sleeping one afternoon, I woke up to a really noisy house and realized that there must be quite a few guys visiting. And so I met Sollie! The best day of my life! We continued to see each other after the holiday and soon I was the lucky one to catch this farmer’s heart! Later in our relationship one of his friends told me that Sollie phoned him the night that he had met me, and told his friend that he had met the women that he is going to marry! I also knew he was the one!
After 3 years of dating, one afternoon he said that we should go to their family farm to take a few photos because he wanted some new photos for his house. Off we went hand in hand with the tripod, ready to take some beautiful farm photos at the hay bales. Later on he said we should take some more photos on our favourite spot on a hill that overlooks the mountains. He directed me where to stand as he stood behind the tripod setting the camera’s timer. I thought it was just another photo… Before I knew he was down on one knee! He said… “would you?” And I said “I do” It was amazing! And the best part is that I have a photo as proof of that very moment.
My dress was Tiana from Maggie Sottero. I totally love it! I ordered it from Olivelli, in Bloemfontein. Nadia at Olivelli also made my garter set and decorated my shoes with lace and flowers. My pearl bracelet and hair clips were also purchased from them. My vintage earrings do however have a story. About 3 years ago I found them between my mother’s accessories and I totally adored it. I decided then and there that I am going to wear them for my wedding one day. It felt so far then! The bridesmaid dresses were quite a mission at first as a struggled to find pretty pastel coloured material. Eventually I purchased the dresses from Love Warrior in Bloemfontein. I just added the fabric belts and clipped on the satin ribbon.
One of the nightmares of a bride is RAIN! As we stood in the church we heard the thunder roaring. To me, it felt like God was talking and blessing us because it happened on the most perfect time. And then it started to rain cats and dogs! Funny enough, I did not give a damn!
I firstly decided on a pastel colour palette, mainly pink, green and dove blue. I then combined it with a ‘Country Chic’ theme. I love the soft colours as it can easily be combined with other soft colours, and you are not bound to a specific shade. The entire wedding and all the detail is my personal touch. I started with all the DIY projects months in advance with the help of my fiancé, mother, grandmother, sisters and friends. My lounge was filled with boxes where I organized and collected every little detail. I wanted to do all the detail myself, as I wanted my ideas to be perfect and exactly like I pictured it. I found all my inspiration on blogs (I am an addict!). All the ideas are too pretty for words; I didn’t know where to start!
Off we went into the pouring rain for our couple shoot, geared with umbrellas! It was SO fun and I would never want to change that. I was just too happy, ‘coz I was married! It was indeed one of the many many fond memories! Compliments to our awesome photographer Stella!
What was your first dance and how did you choose the song?
‘Love Story’ by Taylor Swift has always been our song. We decided to choose this song as we had many fond memories about it since we started dating. Our entire story was indeed a love story and the words were perfect for our wedding dance. Sollie is my prince!
Any advice for couples planning their wedding?
Wedding planning is fun! Enjoy every second! Do the special touches by yourself, it is however your wedding. Make the planning, cutting and pasting a fun filled event where you and you helpers sit around and spend quality time together. The wedding day passes so fast, so make the planning part of the special memory. I would also suggest that you should stop searching for pictures at a certain stage. Else your ideas continue to change all the time while the time is ticking by. Also remember that everything is not just about the wedding day; just as much effort should be put into your marriage preparation.
